To My Fellow Primary Care Nurse Practitioners

Hi, I’m Allison Sowders, CNP — founder and CEO of The Nurse Practitioner Mentorship.

This program is designed specifically for new nurse practitioners in the primary care setting. While it can also benefit those in urgent care, my focus is on the unique challenges of primary care providers.

When I first began practicing, I felt what so many of you feel — overwhelmed, underprepared, and wishing I had someone to guide me. I want to be the mentor I needed five years ago.

Why I Created This Program

In my opinion, NP education doesn’t fully prepare us for real-world practice.

I see this daily in my clinic, where family practice residents spend three years in training with preceptors — doing the exact same job we do as NPs. No wonder so many of us feel lost in the beginning.

I was fortunate enough to spend a year in their program as an “NP fellow”, and that knowledge base has shaped how I practice today. Now, I’ve built this mentorship program to share that knowledge — so you don’t have to struggle alone.

Mission

After just three months, my goal is that you will:

• Have the resources and workflows to thrive in primary care.

My Background

• RN Experience: 4 years in the Emergency Department.

• Education: MSN, University of Cincinnati (2019).

• NP Career: Family practice since 2019 — and still practicing today.

That first year as a new NP felt like a culture shock: stressful, exciting, overwhelming, and isolating all at once. Nearly five years later, I finally feel confident in my role — and I want to shorten that learning curve for you.

A Little About Me

Beyond the clinic, I’m a wife and mom to three little ones. I understand the challenge of balancing family life while adjusting to a demanding new role. My goal is to help you find both confidence in practice and more balance at home.
